Keeping Your Kids Healthy — What Your Children’s Dentist Recommends

lots of children eating different types of treatsCaring for your children is a learning process. Parenthood itself has one of the steepest learning curves of life. The best advice is to take things one step at a time. This also goes for their health needs. As babies, learn about colic and such. As toddlers, learn about their growth marks. When their teeth come in, learn about their dental needs. Lee Trevino Dental has quality children’s dentists on staff. Besides finding a good children’s dentist, you will want to do a few things at home too. One thing you can do is watch their diet. Another thing you can do is teach healthy habits.

Diets Recommended by Your Children’s Dentist

Any diet that a children’s dentist recommends for healthy teeth has to do with sugar intake. Now this does mean watching and sometimes limiting their candy eating. But this is not always the case. Plenty of children who do not eat a lot of candy can still get serious cavities. This happens because candy is not the only sugar that needs to be limited. Fresh fruit, while the better option, has high sugar content.

This means if you child is eating large quantities of fruit, they can and likely will develop cavities anyways. The best way to help avoid cavities and other tooth issues is to limit this. Instead of giving your children fruit each time they want a snack, maybe try a vegetable option. Some vegetables that most kids can adapt too are carrots, celery, and tomato. These options are lower in sugar and still a bit sweet. Or you can offer them a dairy option. Some nice choices are cheese sticks, and yogurt. If all else fails, you can also try unsalted nuts.

Healthy Teeth Habits

Healthy teeth habits are encouraged by most children’s dentist. These habits are easy to start, but can be difficult to maintain. The number one thing is brushing your teeth. However, it needs to be done in a specific way. The brush must hit the back teeth as well as the front. In other words, your child should not just be brushing their front teeth and stopping. To help teach your kids this, you can use a set of model teeth or help them brush for the first time. You want to make sure that they go to the back teeth on both sides. Than do top and bottom rows. After they get the motions down, you want to make sure they keep up with it. This can be the most difficult thing to learn. But if you are diligent, it will help your kids in the long run.

If your child has recently had all their teeth come in, then you need to start thinking about their tooth health. Lee Trevino Dental children’s dentist has experience treating children. Remember to limit their sugar intake on a day to day basis. And to keep them brushing twice daily.  Contact Lee Trevino Dental today!
